Lemon-Brown Sugar Body Scrub

I thought this would be a good one to share, as I've used this type of thing myself, only I probably paid $10 for it! Ridiculous? No doubt, not to mention this stuff is all natural and look how easy it is.

Ingredients
- ¼ cup coarse brown sugar (to gently exfoliate without drying)
- 1 cup grapeseed oil (to moisturize)
- ¼ cup grated lemon peel (to invigorate your senses)

Directions
1. Mix together all ingredients.
2. Gently rub on your body in a circular motion. Concentrate on rough areas like elbows, knees and heels.
3. Rinse with water.

My philosophy on food..

It seems so much time is spent these days on trying to do so much and doing it so quickly, that we forget to appreciate some of the things that take time. I am always short on time for things I want to do. So, sometimes you have to make time. When it comes to cooking, I know it can't always be pretty, and it can't always be gourmet. But what it must be is good. I mean, what's the point if the food isn't enjoyable? I believe in doing what works for you, trying new things, trying something before claiming you don't like it. I also believe that it is nice to take the time to make something a step above average when there is the time, patience, and budget to do so.

I enjoy good old fashioned home cooking. I like some of the more "gourmet" things. I also like being able to grab something out of the refrigerator or pantry and throw something together. I enjoy making things that look and smell wonderful, and I really like sharing that with the people I love. I also understand that with times the way things are, not everyone can afford to buy the best or most expensive items out there. I also firmly believe that you don't have to spend a lot of money, or slave away in the kitchen for hours to have a good meal. It is important to remember it doesn't have to cost a lot to taste good.

I believe in experimenting with different tastes and products. I also believe that sometimes it can't be completely homemade. That doesn't mean the taste has to suffer. With a few touch ups, and personal additions, you can have a decent meal. Even if it wasn't all made from scratch. I believe the more you make yourself, the more control you have health-wise and flavor-wise. I have a semi-homemade category on my blog for this very purpose. Some people don't view it as "real cooking". I view it as life. Ultimately you've got to do what you've got to do. I think, especially for the novice or beginner to cooking, it is a great way to build confidence. For someone short on time or energy or money it can be a real saver in every sense of the word.

I'd encourage people who want to get into cooking, that may be a little intimidated, to go for it. Try out recipes, simple or not, there are tons of places for information. Give it a shot, trust me, it's well worth the effort. I am one of the fortunate people who grew up in a house where everyone was a good cook. I gleaned a great appreciation for flavors, tastes, and aromas. I am passionate about it and have recently renewed my love of cooking. Sharing it with good friends and family is a wonderful way to spend my time. The foodie community is huge, and growing. Along with it a better understanding and knowledge. It is a strong community full of people who are willing to help.

Now, don't get me wrong, there are food snobs out there. I know I can be, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't be happy to take the time to help out where I can. I believe that sharing information is the best way to learn and discover and I apply that to cooking and food. In the end, we all have to eat. What we eat can be good or bad, but if I've got a choice you can believe it is going to be good.

~ Happy cooking!

Bento Box Kick

Okay, so recently I have been on this bento box kick. A friend of mine mentioned something about it, and I was transported back in time to the days I used a bento box. When we used to run out and get a bento box lunch and take them to sit on this old dock on a small stretch of secluded beach ( island of Kauai ) to eat them. Now, here I sit in sunny Southern California, moreover Los Angeles, desert, no beach in site. And sadly, no bento! However, I am on a mission. I have a new found passion for the bento box. As a wife and mom, it is incredibly practical and as far as I am concerned a very under-appreciated tool.

It also saddens me, as I think back, about how I, a child of mixed heritage and culture, wanted so badly to fit in. I'd rather have used a silly lunch box like the other kids just to not be so different. Instead of getting on my soap box to explain where the system failed us as children, I plan to make right my wrong. My son who is also of mixed race will learn to appreciate the similarities and differences of all the races. I will make sure is understands that regardless of what you learn in school, you must always be proud of who you are and where you come from.

Well, okay so that was a little soapboxish, allow me to return to the topic at hand! Bento, boxed lunch. I can't wait to get our new bento boxes, fill them up with wonderful things, and run right out ( 20 minute drive ) to the beach or park to eat and enjoy!

Sadly, right now my bento box is packed up some place at my parent's place, so I've got to make due with my sorry disposable boxes. As soon as we get the new ones I will post photos here. So please stay tuned!

Ice Cube Tray Ideas

Ice cube trays, not just for ice anymore! From flavored ice to sushi to mini-cheesecake, discover some of the creative ways you can save time and money using the ice cube tray.

•    Mini sushi. These could easily be made in the ice cube tray. Here is a link to a very helpful site that I found. Lunch In A Box There are so many possibilities and variations of this. Veggie and non-veggie options.

•    Mini popsicles or juice pops. Filling ice cube trays with your favorite juice or kool-aid, cover with tinfoil then poke toothpicks through the tinfoil and freeze. Remove tinfoil and enjoy!

•    Bite sized jello snacks. Prepare jello according to the package. Fill ice tray about half way and chill til set. Add some small pieces of fruit. Add another flavor of jello to fill, chill until set. ( Cherry & Lime would make a nice combination ). Take great care in removing them from the tray, run a knife along the edge to help them come out easier.

•    Chocolate Treats. A little melted chocolate and a variety of goodies to add to the chocolate. This can be customized to whatever suits your mood. A small amount of vegetable spray in the ice cube tray will help release the chocolates. Peanut butter, caramel, nuts, berries, the possibilities are endless.

•    Champagne Chillers. All you need is the champagne and berries, such as raspberries or strawberries. Fill tray about 3/4 full add a berry to each and freeze. Must freeze at least 24 hours. Add to orange juice or cranberry juice, anything that blends nicely with champagne.

As ideas come to me, or I run across more I'll be sure to update this.
